Install a Breakoffplug

Most electrical submersible pumps have a check valve that is positioned at the top of the pump. The check valve is designed to avoid the column of water draining back through the pump. This is especially important to avoid damage to the pump and motor caused by the water flowing back through the pump.

The breakoffplug is installed into the check valve that is situated directly above the pump. Certain pump manufacturers design pumps with built in check valves while others do not. Either way, it is not a problem. You should always have a check valve at the top of the pump. The breakoffplug is installed on the top side of the check valve.

Install the check valve with built-in breakoffplug above the pump. Connect the column pipe to the pump and lower the pump into position.

Pump Retrieval

When you are ready to remove the pump from the well, you simply remove the elbow at the surface and lower the torpedo down the inside of the column pipe. When the torpedo comes to rest on the breakoffplug, you pull on the rope, lifting the torpedo and then let go, allowing the torpedo to drop down and shear off the breakoffplug. The water will now drain through the open breakoffplug and down to the static water level.
